What is a stand-alone data logger ?
A stand-alone data logger is an electronic device that records environmental data without the need for a permanent connection to a computer or any network (Wi-Fi, mobile data, etc.).
These stand-alone data loggers are very useful in a wide range of fields : temperature control, humidity control in the agri-food industry, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, scientific research, cold chain logistics and so on.
How does a stand-alone data logger work ?
A stand-alone data logger operates on its own.
It has a sensor (temperature, humidity), an internal battery and an internal clock. The sensor can be internal or external, with an insertion probe for example. PC or smartphone software is used for programming and reading data.
What are the advantages of a standalone data logger ?
- Versatility and flexibility : stand-alone data loggers can be used in a wide range of environments. You can place them anywhere : in remote locations, in a product, in packaging, in a vehicle, without the need for a power supply or network connection. They're also easy to move around.
- Autonomy : this type of data logger has an internal memory and runs on battery power. This allows data to be measured over long periods without external intervention.
- Data security and reliability : measured data are stored in the data logger's own memory. This guarantees the integrity of your data. The battery ensures autonomous operation in the event of a power cut.
- Cost savings : stand-alone data loggers operate independently of your network, without the need for expensive communications equipment.
- Ease of use : a large number of stand-alone data loggers can be set up quickly and easily, making them accessible without the need for a particular technical profile.
Is a standalone data logger right for me ?
Are you considering whether to go for a stand-alone data logger or one with real-time connectivity ? The choice depends on your specific needs. To help you make up your mind, it’s important to consider the following points :
- "A posteriori" control : if you only need to read temperatures from time to time, after a given period, transport or production process, a stand-alone data logger is perfectly appropriate. If you need to be alerted in real time, a connected data logger is preferable.
- Size and discretion : if you need to measure the temperature in a small product or area, or if you need a discreet system, a stand-alone data logger is the right choice.
- Mobility or transport needs : for temperature monitoring during the transport of sensitive goods, where connectivity may be intermittent or non-existent, a stand-alone data logger is particularly suitable.
- Projects with limited budgets : stand-alone data loggers, often less expensive than connected models, are preferable if the budget available for purchasing equipment is restricted.
How do I choose the right stand-alone data logger ?
To choose the right stand-alone data logger, you need to consider the following points :
- Parameters to be monitored : do I need to monitor temperature only, or humidity as well ? A stand-alone data logger that measures temperature only will be more economical.
- Measurement range : Weezidot measures temperature from -40 to +85°C. Thermo Buttons 21G, 22L and 25L have a range from -40 to +85°C. Thermo Bouton 22T goes up to 125°C and Thermo Bouton 22E up to 140°C.
- Accuracy : ± 0.5°C or ± 1°C, depending on the temperature range at which your product is to be stored. The narrower the range, the greater the precision required.
- Memory size : depending on the desired recording time and measurement frequency. A Thermo Button 21G with a memory of 2048 points and a measurement frequency of 5 minutes can store one week's worth of data. To store two weeks, you'll need a Thermo Button 22L with a memory of 4096 values.
- Data logger lifespan : our Thermo Buttons have a lifespan of up to 10 years, depending on use. Some of our competitors' data loggers are disposable. WeeziDot, with its replaceable battery, also lasts for many years
- Ease of reading and analysis : easy-to-use, comprehensive software like Thermotrack PC lets you analyze data in the blink of an eye. It's a time-saver for you every day.
- Technology used Ease of reading and analysis : A Bluetooth Data logger like WeeziDot enables wireless reading from an Android or IOS phone.
